More Maps

This is in honour of my dad's book launch yesterday (He's in South Africa, thus the map).

Weather

We've just been set a very interesting project at uni. We were asked to design something for the side wall of the university that reacts to the weather. I just spent a few days researching lots of information graphics and stuff, and then today we get an email saying that the solution has to be typographic... I guess this is a taste of real life where clients will just throw something like that at you. 

Rain, rain, go away

I am mourning the end of summer. Autumn has officially begun in ernest. Last week I was wearing skirts and flip flops. Today I'm in a scarf, boots, wooly socks and all soggy from the rain.

This map shows average temperature and rainfall, I shall search it later for somewhere warmer to migrate to.

Home again.

I had forgotten how long it took to move house! I FINALLY unpacked the last of my boxes yesterday, including my box of maps and my eccentric scanner. I've been languishing in bed the last few days with the flu and today I've left the house! Which means I'm in the library using the internet :( The sunny weather has also gone with my flu, and now it's raining when I want to enjoy being well. Anyway I'm still in the process of getting my act together for uni, which means sorting out all the stuff I've collected from my travels. These are just a couple of maps from a school atlas showing where I've been all summer.

Bargain!

I am very chuffed with myself today for finding a bargain! A whole box of maps from 1902, 56 in total, all for £10! They were in this flea market and I'd bought a couple last year and framed them, and they were £3 each. But now I guess they were trying to get rid of them so I got the whole box for £10. Unfortunately a lot of them are damaged. I think they originally came from a large atlas because it seems they were all bound together at one point, so a lot of them are torn. But they're still gorgeous. My scanner doesn't do them justice! I'm going to scan the lot and possibly post all the nicer ones. Because they are so old there are lots of countries that don't exist any more, or the borders have changed. I love Persia, and the Chinese Empire. I could stare at them for ages! All the European Maps look so strange with the German Empire and  Austria-Hungary. I have spent all afternoon putting them together and looking at them. 

Guide Books

My main collection (in monetary terms!) is books. especially lovely old ones so it's even better when I can get one with maps in it. This is a beautiful little thing with about 50 little fold out maps in it. And I used it when I went to Cornwall 2 years ago and most of the walks are still there, but the maps are a bit out of date. Quite difficult to navigate with a 100 year old map!
