Another cool penguin cover

Friday, 29 May 2009

the medium is the massage

Not the greatest of Penguin covers but the content makes up for it.  It's a bit of a bizarre mish mash of photography typography and illustration all trying to make the point that society is shaped by the way we communicate and not what we communicate. The blurb is a review by A. M. Schlesinger Jr 'It is a chaotic combination of bland assertion, astute guesswork, fake analogy, dazzling insight, hopeless nonsense, shockmanship, showmanship, wisecracks and oracular mystification, all mingling cockily and indiscriminately in an endless random monologue. It also, in my judgement, contains a deeply serious argument.' That says it all really.

David Pearson

I think that all creative people sometimes see someone else's work and think 'God, I wish that I did that' and I feel like that about every single book cover that David Pearson has done. If you're into books and beautiful design check him out here.
However beautiful the books look on screen, it doesn't compare to how they are! Most are embossed and come on a really nice thick stock. I've got my hands on a lot of his great ideas series, more to follow!
